Hi, meet KTM

13 September 2008 | Nepal, Kathmandu
She (Dutch girl), Le Lucky Deville, was upgraded to business class, while I was in 30 D. No wait, it was 27 A! Hmhm, and a Nepaliman sat next to me. He allowed me to practice my Nepali but wasn't too amused when, in perfect Nepali of course :p, I told him his belly was too big. However, he was a businessman who lives and works in Quatar, so I let him off the hook. I did. He was also impressed when I spoke Arabic to the hostess, whom I overheard saying she had done her training in Marocco to another passenger in Spanish. Good ride :) and my Hindu Homie awoke me several times to take pictures of the mountains. Come to think of it, seeing London tonight was wowwy too. For the first time ever we flew directly over the Thames... breathetaking. KTM airport reminded me of the one in Kittila, Finland. Petit, cute, people running around - and not in the Schiphol kind of way. Meanwhile, we waited endlessly for our luggage and mine finally showed up (!) but one of my Dutch companions' didn't. We were the last to leave the arrival hall. Luckily there were people waiting for us. Once we got out our luggage was carried to a car and we drove off into the unknown.
Downtown KTM is like a 24 hour Asian Ghetto.
And I enjoyed every moment of it. Especially because the moment we drove off, my door was still open and some dude was asking for money. " Drive, Guru-ji. drive!" I yelled, all of us in stitches, laughing at the poor sod whom we knew had done nothing but stand and watch. Fuck that.
Dinner. My appetite was soso because I had eaten well on the plane but how can you resist a Nepalese chicken curry on your first evening? The Dutch girl (and I do apologize for not remembering her name right now :( ) ordered scrambled eggs and a banana pancake and we asked to sit on the roof terrace. Nice, candle lit yumyums... until it rained. We finished while sitting in the hallway by the door talking about how we ended up here. She's nice. Marketing girl with a lawyer boyfriend. And smart. When she went to bed I took my beer onto the top deck and could admire 360 degrees of nighttime KTM. The most surreal thing about it was that in a radius of 100 yards I spotted another five or six people either on their balconies or in their open stairwells, just chilling before bedtime. My landlord must have thought I had gone to bed, although I had told one of the dudes that I was going to finish my beer (Nepal ICE, or 'Nice') outside, because when I came down the door was locked! Unfortunately I had to ever so slightly and gently and lovingly break it open. I'll tell him I'll pay for the damages - it's a good story anyhow.
